Pre-Conference Workshops & Tutorials

June 10–13, 2025

ISLS Annual Meeting 2025

Submission Details

Workshops and tutorials should focus on themes within the scope of either CSCL or ICLS. For instance, these events can allow for trying out a technology and/or scenarios, elaborating on conceptual frameworks or discussing research designs.

Pre-conference Workshops (4 pages): Pre-conference workshops should be designed as active sessions on a focused issue. Substantial time should be allocated for interaction between participants. Following the practice launched at ISLS 2023, workshops can be self-contained in the half-day or full-day format, or can be designed to extend over a period of time. Extended workshops are reviewed by the same criteria as pre-conference workshops but might include: (a) a sustained thread of multiple meetings scheduled prior to the conference (i.e., beginning after proposal acceptance that lead up to the conference workshop session), (b) activities following the workshop in the conference (e.g., joint data analysis sessions, continued discussions of research designs) and (c) curation or development of workshop products for publication on the ISLS website. The planned format of the workshop should be described in the proposal.

Pre-conference Tutorials (4 pages): Pre-conference tutorials should be designed as collaborative learning experiences on a topic, technology, design or methodology within CSCL or LS. Tutorials should stimulate active participation and interaction between participants as well. Innovative format submissions are encouraged, provided they are within the scope of a tutorial.

Submission Instructions

The proposal should be submitted via EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=isls2025 by 17 January 2025, 23:59 AOE.

Proposals for full or half-day events should be written in English and are maximum 4 pages (not including references). Up to one extra page for references can be added.

Pre-conference event proposals

The proposal for the tutorial or workshop enables the pre-conference co-chairs to evaluate not only the content of the event but also the organization of the event. Your proposal will be different from the camera-ready version for the proceedings, if accepted, since the intended audience will be different. The proposal should be written with the pre-conference co-chairs as the intended audience, describing practical issues that will enable us (pre-conference co-chairs) to evaluate the proposal. The descriptions should not exceed 4 pages, not including references (i.e., you may use up to one page for the reference list) and should include:

  • Workshop/Tutorial Title
  • Proposers/Organizers’ names, affiliations, contact information, and backgrounds, including prior experience in conducting such events
  • Intended audience
  • Duration of event (half-day or full day)
  • Description of the event that includes:
    • Theme and goals
    • Theoretical background and relevance to field and conference
    • Outline of planned activities
    • Expected outcomes and contributions
  • Participation requirements (how tutorial or workshop participants will be chosen)
  • Relationship to similar events conducted in the past (e.g., at CSCL or ICLS), if any
  • Facilities and equipment required (Please be specific if you feel you will require anything beyond a normal projector provided at a typical conference)
  • Minimal and maximal number of participants expected (please note you will need a minimum of 8 participants to run the workshop)
  • A description of how you will solicit participation including a draft call for participation that will be posted by organizers on the ISLS 2025 website if the event is accepted

Pre-conference description for proceedings

After the notification of acceptance (mid February), you will be asked to prepare a pdf and word document with a description of the workshop/tutorial that will appear in the conference proceedings. It should not exceed 4 pages not counting references and should adhere to the ISLS Author Guidelines.

The final version of the 4-page summary must be submitted no later than the “cameraready” deadline (see Important Dates). This should be written with the reader of the conference proceedings in mind, who may be reading the description after the event has taken place. The format can be flexible, but it is suggested that the description of the proceedings include:

  1. Title of event
  2. Organizers’ names and backgrounds
  3. Theme and goals
  4. Theoretical background and relevance to field and conference
  5. Expected outcomes and contributions

          Proposal selection process

Proposals will be reviewed by the pre-conference co-chairs. Proposals may also be reviewed by additional judges at the discretion of the co-chairs.

If two proposals are found to be very similar, organizers will be asked to consider whether to merge the proposals, coordinate with morning and afternoon sessions, or justify the viability of running the events in conflict with each other.

          Evaluation

To create a high-quality program representing the newest ideas and results in the field, submitted proposals for workshops and tutorials will be evaluated with respect to:

          • Originality
          • Quality
          • Significance
          • Relevance to a specified target audience of CSCL and/or LS researchers
          • Clarity
          • Workshop / tutorial activities
          • Participant interaction

If accepted, workshops and tutorials need a minimum of eight participants to run. Half day workshops cost 25€ for each participant and full day workshops cost 50€; up to three co-presenters can attend without paying.

We look forward to your proposals and the creation of a rich program of pre-conference sessions at ISLS 2025. You are welcome to contact the workshop chairs ([email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]) if you have any questions about the pre-conference workshops and tutorials.
